"Occupy Central" activist, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Academic Federation Zhou Yongkang admitted on December 1 that the operation to close the Hong Kong government headquarters the day before had failed, and bowed to the demonstrators injured during the operation and apologized. Huang Zhifeng, the convenor of the school of thought, took another extreme action while apologizing: he and two girls announced an indefinite hunger strike, forcing the Hong Kong government to restart negotiations.
ACSF said it was considering "advancing and retreating"
On the evening of November 30, two major student organizations, the Student Federation and the School of Thoughts, mobilized a large number of "occupied China" demonstrators to surround and paralyze the Hong Kong SAR government headquarters. The operation ended in violent clashes with police and injured and arrested dozens of people.
The next day, the leaders of the two student organizations publicly apologized to the demonstrators and acknowledged that the operation had failed. Zhou Yongkang said that he originally expected the operation to escalate and could put pressure on the government, but in fact the occupation methods did not work, and other methods need to be considered. He also said for the first time that he has to make a decision on the advance and retreat, and "has no longer considered" the escalation action, and will "think seriously about the advance and retreat" in the next few days.
Huang Zhifeng chose a path to the dark. He announced on the spot that he would start an indefinite hunger strike with the other two girls, in order to force the Hong Kong government to resume negotiations with students, and the Standing Committee of the National People ’s Congress to withdraw the relevant decision of the Hong Kong political reform.
At this point, the two most stubborn "occupy central" organizers of the academic federation and the ideological trend of the people have clearly diverged for the first time.
Zhou Yongkang acknowledged that Huang Zhifeng's announcement of a hunger strike was unexpected for the academic federation. He was worried that the hunger strike would not be effective for the government, and it was not the right time. However, he still said that hunger strike was also a "method".
The decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on Hong Kong's political reform on August 31 has the highest legal effect. Earlier, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has stated repeatedly that the request for the People's Congress to withdraw its decision is illegal and impossible to achieve. In spite of this, the Hong Kong Government sent five representatives in October to talk with the representatives of the academic federation. The conversation was seen as a "down step" for the students, but the students did not appreciate it, but instead escalated the protest.
It is an indisputable fact that students have been gunned
In stark contrast to the students, the "Zhongzhong three sons" who first launched "Zhanzhong" withdrew from the "jumping boat" at the beginning of "Zhongzhong"; and opposition parties ’actions against students on November 30, Strong opposition was also expressed.
Allegations of students being used as cannon fodder by the "occupy central" forces have been denied by student representatives from the outset. They stated that they were not incited, but rather voluntary. But judging from the "adults" scrambling to cut, it has become an indisputable fact that students have been "fired" by politicians.
"Three sons of Occupy Central" Dai Yaoting, Chen Jianmin and Zhu Yaoming held a press conference on the afternoon of the 2nd and announced that they would surrender to the Central Police Station at 3pm on the 3rd to assume legal responsibility for the occupation. They claimed that they had prepared a confession for the public's reference, acknowledging that they had participated in public gatherings in the occupied area and might be guilty of participating in an unauthorized public assembly under the Public Order Ordinance. There is a chance that he will be sentenced to imprisonment. The criminal record will be maintained for at least 3 years. It does not rule out that the police will charge more serious crimes.
"Zhanzhong Sanzi" also called for "citizens who agree with the concept", but said that it did not intend to become an operation to surround the police station. At the press conference, they also called on students to evacuate the occupied area.
Members of the Panmin Legislative Council issued a joint statement on the 2nd, calling on "dual learning" to announce the end of the general action of containment. Citizens' Legislative Councillor Tang Jiazheng said that the "dual-learning" action would affect the election of the Panmin People's District Council next year and the next year's Legislative Council, which would result in the loss of veto power in the Legislative Council.
A hunger strike is meaningless
Huang Zhifeng's "indefinite hunger strike" has sparked ridicule among Hong Kong netizens. Some netizens said that a normal hunger strike would require medical treatment within five days, and politicians had a precedent for hunger strike. They had lost a few pounds after more than 40 days because they had chicken soup every day. Many netizens use "I have never eaten rotten apples since then", "I have eaten hunger fast", and "I have eaten 22 hours a day to eat" to express ridicule. Some netizens also suggested that choosing self-immolation would be effective.
It is to be expected that no matter whether the student's representative hunger strike is "playing for real", there will not be any substantial change in the outcome of "occupy middle". The root cause is that Hong Kong's political reform can only be carried out within the legal framework determined by the Basic Law and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. It is impossible to satisfy illegal demands, especially those expressed in illegal and extreme ways.
"Occupy Central", which caused huge trauma to Hong Kong for more than 60 days, has basically come to an end. What remains is how the law will deal with the issue of "occupied" organizers and participants.
Li Yanyan, the convener of the Major Police League, went to the Chief Executive's Office on the 2nd and submitted a petition letter to Chief Executive Liang Zhenying, asking the government to deal with the representatives of "occupational third son" and "double school" severely. Li Yanyan said that Liang Zhenying, as a university superintendent, has a responsibility to maintain the reputation of the university, and asked Liang Zhenying to punish the staff members who violated the rules, including Professor Dai Yaoting of the Law Department of Hong Kong University and Chen Jianmin, a professor of the Sociology Department of the University of China.
